Bamboo flooring has a reputation problem it no longer deserves. Early products were soft, faded and gave the whole category a bad name that has stuck around for fifteen years. Modern strand woven bamboo is a different product entirely, and on hardness it beats most of the timbers it competes with. Here is what actually matters when you are deciding.
What bamboo flooring actually is
Bamboo is a grass, not a tree. That single fact drives almost everything else about the product, including how it is made and why it is considered a sustainable option.
A bamboo floorboard is not cut from a solid piece the way a timber board is cut from a log. The bamboo is broken down into strands, then those strands are compressed under extreme pressure with an adhesive to form a solid board. The compression is where the hardness comes from, and it is why the modern product performs so differently from the early ones.
Why strand woven is the only version worth considering
There are three ways bamboo flooring gets made, and they are not equivalent.
Horizontal bamboo is made from flat strips laid side by side and glued, showing the characteristic knuckle pattern of the plant. Vertical bamboo uses the same strips turned on edge, giving a narrower, more uniform grain. Both are the older method, both are relatively soft, and both are where bamboo’s poor reputation came from.
Strand woven is the modern method. The bamboo is shredded into fibres and compressed rather than glued in strips, which produces a far denser and harder board. This is the only construction we stock, and it is the only one we would recommend for an Australian home.
If you are comparing bamboo products anywhere, this is the first question to ask. A quote for horizontal or vertical bamboo and a quote for strand woven are not quotes for the same thing, whatever the label says.
How hard is it really?
Hardness in flooring is measured on the Janka scale. Strand woven bamboo carries a Janka rating of 15.0, which puts it among the hardest floors available in Australia and comfortably above most hardwood species used for domestic flooring.
In practice that means it stands up well to the things that actually damage floors in a family home: dropped items, dragged furniture, dog claws and grit walked in from outside. It does not make the floor indestructible, and nothing does, but the hardness argument is one of the strongest reasons to look at bamboo seriously.
The sustainability case, honestly
This is where bamboo has a genuine advantage rather than a marketing one.
Bamboo reaches harvest maturity in four to five years. A hardwood tree used for flooring takes decades, and in some species well over a century. Because bamboo is a grass, cutting it does not kill the plant, and the same stand regrows and is harvested again. No native or rainforest logs are involved.
The honest qualification: bamboo is compressed with adhesives and most of it is grown and manufactured overseas, so it is not a zero-impact product. If sustainability is your main reason for choosing a floor, ask about the specific product’s emissions standards and sourcing rather than taking the category claim at face value. How bamboo behaves in a Perth home
Perth puts a floor through a wide humidity swing every year, from a long dry summer into a wet winter, and most homes here are built on a concrete slab.
Strand woven bamboo handles that cycle well because the compression process produces a dense, stable board. As with any floor, the two things that determine whether it performs are correct acclimatisation before installation and correct expansion gaps at the edges. Both are installation questions rather than product questions, which is worth knowing if you are comparing a supply-only quote against a supplied and installed one.
Why you need to see strand woven bamboo in person
Bamboo is one of the products people are most surprised by in the showroom, because the version in their head is the version from fifteen years ago. Seeing a strand woven board, and feeling how dense it is, does more than any description.
